Owen leaves behind a heartbroken family made up of two loving parents, a twin sister, Izzy, and a younger brother Charlie.
Inspired by the life Owen led based on integrity, hard work, humor, and a desire to help others, we knew we had to continue on to help others in his absence. Owen left a “roadmap” for this work in his artwork; he outlined his plan for recovery and stressed the importance of honesty and vulnerability. While mourning and profoundly missing Owen, we were visited by a bright colored yellow male goldfinch just days after Owen’s death. We felt this was a sign. A bird's appearance after someone’s death is believed to represent a soul of the departed. The goldfinch, in particular, symbolizes positivity, abundance and joy. The goldfinch has reminded us to stay optimistic during these trying times. Our family has started The Goldfinch Foundation in honor of Owen knowing he would support and champion any effort that would help to improve mental wellness. It is clear our community and world needs something to change. Why not have that change emerge through the life and death of Owen Willers?
